Help & Donate | Donating to Causes We Care About

Introduction:

You always hear that running a site cost money, and that time is money ..and, trust me, it takes a lot of time to run a site. But I'd feel lousy asking for money for a fansite, for a hobby, so I have a better idea: If you like this site, if you like what I and the other main contributors have taken our time to provide, could you help us in another way? Could you help us help the things we care about?

Here are some charities each of us has chosen. In theory, donating to them means you could be making up for us not being able to support them because our extra time & money (in my case) goes to providing for this site.

It would also just mean:

  • the world to to us,
  • and it would be going to an amazing cause that is in more need of help than I am.

A note about advertising: I will not ever want to make money off this site, or any site I do because of a love for a fandom. If I ever can't afford to keep this site going, and I need to place ads on it, I would donate anything that went past covering the basic hosting costs and I would be transparent about the costs, profits, and donation amounts.

Charity: Water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. 100% of public donations directly fund water projects.

Mission Statement:

"Most of us have never really been thirsty. We’ve never had to leave our houses and walk 5 miles to fetch water. We simply turn on the tap, and water comes out. Clean. Yet there are a billion people on the planet who don’t have clean water. It’s hard to imagine a billion people; one in eight might be easier. One in eight people in our world don’t have access to the most basic of human needs.

Now, make a decision to help. We’re not offering grand solutions and billion dollar schemes, but instead, simple things that work. Things like freshwater wells, rainwater catchments and sand filters. For about $20 a person, we know how to help millions."

"In almost five years, charity: water has raised $40 million and funded 4,282 water projects. View them here by country, local partner and project type."

The Lupus Foundation of America is the foremost national nonprofit health organization dedicated to finding the causes of and cure for lupus and providing support, services and hope to all people affected by lupus.

What is Lupus?

Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body. In lupus, something goes wrong with your immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs ("foreign invaders," like the flu). Normally our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from these invaders. Instead your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues and creates autoantibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body; most commonly the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys, and nervous system. It is believed that 5 million people throughout the world have a form of lupus. Lupus strikes mostly women 15-44. However, men, children, and teenagers develop lupus, too.

The White Wolf Sanctuary is located in a coastal mountain range of Oregon near the small town of Tidewater. The sanctuary covers 60 acres, 50 acres of which are completely fenced and isolated for the protection of Arctic wolves. The wolves are not in cages and run as freely as possible within 50 acres of natural habitat which includes ponds, shelters, trees and meadows.

"The average population of wolves in the sanctuary is 8-10, which are rescued wolves who were injured, unwanted or abandoned. White Wolf Sanctuary accepts only pure, Arctic wolves.

WWS is owned and operated by Lois Tulleners, who has been working with wolves for the past twenty-five years. The project of protecting wolves in the wild and also the resident wolves at WWS is of utmost importance to the sanctuary. We rescue wolves from their past and from their future and also care for wolves who have come to us from a variety of circumstances.  We allow them to live out their lives here in a safe and happy environment.  It hurts us every day to see any wild animal in captivity, but we are confident that the wolves here have a better life than before they arrived."

Personal note from Melora: I've been here. It's a beautiful place that's so lovingly run there's no doubt the wolves are happy... but it's so out of the way that the woman in charge never seems to have enough help. She doesn't like to ask for help, so I'll ask for her: Please help her help these wolves that would be dead without her and don't have enough 'wild' left to return to.
